How does it work?
Spoiler alert! A mood ring is essentially a liquid crystal thermometer. The faux gemstone (made of quartz or glass) has a thin sheet of liquid crystal sealed underneath. Changes in temperature cause the crystal to reflect different wavelengths of light which changes the color of the faux stone. The liquid crystal used in mood rings is set up to display a "neutral" colour at the average body temperature, 37 C.
